In the 1980s, Urs worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during Lebanon's civil war and the Israeli occupation, followed by a mission in El Salvador's civil war. At the beginning of this century, he led a special mission in Palestine on behalf of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, serving as a legal advisor, head of staff, and lecturer in international law to officials from various foreign ministries., This presentation will aim to deepen your understanding of IHL and its significance in contemporary peace efforts, providing insights into the challenges and solutions in conflict settings. Among his many postings, he served as Ambassador to Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, and Cape Verde, with residence in Dakar, before leading the Swiss Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. Later, he served as Ambassador to India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and the Russian Federation. ,  , After retiring in 2011, Ambassador Walter remained deeply engaged in international affairs, contributing to academic programs and serving as Rotary International’s representative to the United Nations in Geneva.
